No the solinoin should not be engaged until the No, the solenoid should not be engaged until the start button is released. The start button is released, when the engine starts. The engine could not start without compression! The solenoid holds the exhaust valve open! Only a bit of compression release is needed to get the engine cranking. Large singles have always been a bear to turn over. Did you ever experience the kick starter method in vintage singles. I had a 650cc twin Triumph twin that was a piece of cake starting as compared to my 500cc single BSA.
The solenoid is not the cause for the clutch gear braking teeth! Read down the forum to find out the real cause. A redesign has happened and now a new part is replacing the culprit.
